This shot was taken near Bedugal. If I remember correctly, my friend Marla shot this.
A view of Mount Agung - Bali's Mother Mountain - from the black sand beaches of Bali's southeast coast.
This is part of the display at a very unusual temple in Bedugal, on the north shore of the lake. The temple is an odd mix of animist, chinese and hindu influences.
All dressed up and ready to jam. This was shot at a temple festival at Tirta Empul.
People always say to me "I don't understand why you like this shot." To me, it's the juxtaposition of the mundane with the sacred, the way the Balinese mix spirituality seamlessly into their every day lives. The sacred is neither segregated nor fenced off. It is, rather, an integral part of life.
This was shot on a soft rainy day in wet season -- this is the main road through Jatiluwih, the rice bowl of Bali.
This religious procession was shot at Tirta Empul. I love the shot as it is really a microcosm of Balinese society -- a riot of color, conversation and ceremony. From the grandmothers trying to bring some sense of gravity to the event with their stylized hand movements, to the pouting young girl who would clearly seem to prefer being elsewhere!
Handmade offerings are everywhere on the island. They often embody their own unique visual poetry. It's hard to capture.
This beautiful, tiny offering is placed over a piece of split bamboo from which flows a spring in the hillside. This was found near the Gitgit Waterfalls between Bedugal and Singaraja.
So much spectacular, expressive statuary on this island... This was shot in a little temple garden at Tirta Empul.
